The Reason Behind the Farewell (さよならの理 (り) 由 (ゆう)  Sayonara no Riyū) is the fifteenth chapter of the 100 Kanojo manga.

Summary

Hakari asks Rentarou if he will break up with her. Rentarou, dumbfounded, tries to ask her what she means, but the staff on the scene asks the two of them to go and change before he gets the chance. Once he’s finished changing, he looks for Hakari but one of the staff members tells her that she left in a car shortly after getting the photo as she had urgent business to attend to. Rentarou attempts to call her, but she doesn’t pick up. As a last resort, he heads to her house using the address on the back of some sexy photos she recently sent him.

He arrives outside the Hakari’s house and spots Hakari in the window. He calls out for her, but after she spots him, he signals for Rentarou to be quiet and to crouch. A security guard rushes over to his location because of the ruckus he made. Once the guard has left, Hakari calls Rentarou, telling him that she doesn’t have much time. He asks her why she broke up with him, as he can’t just accept the sudden breakup without a reason. She tells him that she simply fell out of love with him, but he sees through her lie because of the face she was making and asks her for the real reason. She confesses that she told her mother everything, including the polygamous relationship that she’s a part of. Her mother took her phone away and made preparations for Hakari to transfer schools the next day. Rentarou calls this ridiculous, but Hakari informs him that her mother has enough money and power to make anything she desires possible. The days where they can spend time together will never come again.

Hakari’s mother appears behind her, snatching the phone from Hakari’s hand and pulling the curtains so Rentarou cannot see inside. She tells him over the phone that he should never appear in front of her daughter again and that a high school pest like him can be crushed at any time she sees fit. Rentarou tries to speak with her, but she hangs up before he gets the chance. He attempts to shout at her through the gate, but a security guard arrives and tells him to stop causing a scene. He tries to tell the guard that he wants to speak with the head of the house, but he informs him that they’ve been instructed not to let Rentarou into the property under any reason. He tries to struggle but ultimately gives up after he’s told by the guard that life is filled with many things he has no control over.

In the mansion, Hakari begs to her mother for forgiveness as she was instructed not to get involved with Rentarou ever again. Her mother states that if she fails to obey her orders, her only option is to take Rentarou to a place where she can never see him again. Hakari begins to panic, and prostrates herself, begging her mother not to do anything to Rentarou. Hakari’s mother ultimately chooses not to do anything, as she cares for her daughter more than anyone else in the world. In her eyes, Rentarou is nothing more then a five-timing maggot who will do nothing but bring Hakari misery.

Whilst walking home, Rentarou reflects on the words that he was told. He shouts at himself, frustrated that he’s so weak and powerless. Feeling dejected, he wonders if there really is nothing he can do about the situation. After seeing a pink-four-leaf clover in a flower bed however, the same flowers he used to confess to Hakari and Karane, he regains his fighting spirit.

He gathers the rest of his girlfriends to a nearby park, where he tells them about Hakari’s mother forcing Hakari to break up with him and his plan to sneak into the Hanazono mansion and get her. They tell him that the plan won’t be simple and isn’t likely to work, something which he acknowledges himself, but he states that he’s going to do the best he can do in the situation and make Hakari happy. He says that he’ll take Hakari out of town after rescuing her, but he doesn’t know where he’ll go or for how long. Thus, he asks if his girlfriends will wait for him for the day when he does come back. Karane speaks up, saying that she’s not going to enjoy waiting for someone who she doesn’t even know will come back. For that reason, she states that she’s going to come with Rentarou. The rest of the group agree with her, saying that they’ll assist with the rescue as well. Rentarou is stumped as to why they’ve chosen to come with him because of the dangers, but he quickly realises that they feel the same as him which is why they want to help. After coming to an agreement, the team head off to rescue Hakari.
