Rentarou's Family's World of Unknown Fairy Tales ( (れん) () (ろう) ファミリーの () らないメルヘンの () (かい) Rentarō Famirī no Shiranai Meruhen no Sekai?) is the one hundred and seventy eighth chapter of the 100 Kanojo manga.

Summary[]

The 29th girlfriend meets the family. What happens now...?

Rentarou introduces Meru Zetsubouda to the Family; both Meme and Shizuka recognize her as the author of "Yume's Home in the Clouds", while Himeka surprisingly discovers she's a classmate of hers, making Tama surprised about how many talents the class has though Kiki claims she's an "abnormal" one. When Shizuka and Meme call her amazing, Meru admits she isn't, but the real amazing things are fairy tales and the despair of the world: two sides of the same coin of darkness and light upon which she is a messenger of the light within the darkness, shocking Himeka on how she's even more abnormal than she is and even Kurumi in thinking Shizuka's shocked by how this is the author of her current favorite book. Shizuka is much stronger than that after her encounter with the fake Hono'o-sensei, but is still nervous confronting her.

Meru soon begins a sermon about fairy tales; how they are the only true path to salvation in the world and that they need to put their belief and trust in them. Girls like Shizuka, Hakari, Meme and Chiyo are immediately enraptured about their beauty, courage and the memory that stays within after you grow up; while Ahko, Mai, Usa-chan and Eira bring up how available they are for their cuteness, their beautiful locations, the ability to have living objects to keep away loneliness and a nostalgia for them respectively. Mimimi brings up that when she was five, she read a lot of fairy tales involving princesses and gained a burning rivalry with them, which many wonder why she would want such a thing. Usa-chan wants to befriend princesses but Kusuri wants to befriend the witches and the drugs that they make with their brew. While Uto begins to state whether she can believe or doubt Meru, she admits she is a resident in such a world for many an age; and Himeka, as Uto's apprentice, states she is there with her.

Yaku is confused by the concept of "fairy tales" and Naddy tries to bring up the idea of "Momotarou", realizing there and then that it's also a fairy tale, which Meru confirms making both excited; Tama is also excited with the idea that if there can be talking monkeys and dogs, then talking cats would be no different. Yamame brings up that even if animals can't talk, you can still consider their feelings to communicate with them; this makes Meru see the large girl as a fairy tale herald, shocking her not knowing what that even means!

As Meru turns towards Hahari, she states she thinks fairy tales are cute but she's too old for them; but the author states there is no upper limit on reading them and if you love fairy tales, you will have a heart as pure as a child, no matter what the age. The chairwoman states she's converting to "fairytaleism" and tries to convince Kurumi to join her; the eater wonders why and Hahari offers her the treats within the stories, which Meru brings up giant turnips and gingerbread houses. Kurumi wonders what's the point of fantasy food if you can't eat it, but Hahari admits if she converts now, she'll use her money to make these fantasies reality, finally winning Kurumi over.

Momoha brags she had hopes and dreams similar to those of fairy tales, mostly about thinking the next gamble will be the big one that will win her a fortune, called out by Matsuri as merely fantasy. Meru sees this as a similar type of fairy tale and that those who hold fast to them like Momoha should be a model for others to grow up like (which Karane calls as bogus considering the ethics teacher's nature). Momiji tries to grope Meru's chest and she sees her likewise with her devil may care attitude making her similar to a sprite or fairy (or in Kurumi's view, a gremlin).

Iku brings up her own problems with fairy tales: problems tend to be solved by miracles or interventions and she prefers hard work to overcome obstacles; Kishika likewise states "chivalry must be earned by one's own hand" and Rin thinks that with how gentle they are, she rather something more "stimulating". As Kishika is lured away by Hahari making her melt into "reading her a story", Meru talks to Iku and Rin about the trials and punishments of various tales including climbing beanstalks and fighting giants with only a sewing needle; while there are gruesome punishments as well including having a stomach opened and filled with rocks for a victim to drown! Rin soon remembers a childhood memory about the Witch falling off a cliff to her death in "Snow White" which gave her fuzzy feelings. (though Mei believes they have to do with other "fuzzy feelings" Hakari once brought up involving "playing with a table corner")

Meru soon convinces others of the fairy tale life, including Suu's desire to interact with numbers, and Matsuri's love of festivals; but other girls remain skeptical: Karane still considers it "kids stuff", Nano rather read something Shizuka recommends to her, and Mei has so little interaction with these tales that it's lost on her. Meru soon begins to tell them the story of "The Happy Prince"; by the end, Karane seems to not think much of it, but her face is covered in tears, Meru claiming that fairy tales do exist within her which Karane tries to "tsundere" away. Nano states statues do not possess an ego and thus it's impossible for it to communicate; while Mei states that swallows can't talk. But Nano realizes that the talking sparrow may have to do with absurdist humor and thus this is a more comedic talem, confusing Kishika in the interpretation. Suu makes it worse stating that "God told the angel to carry two of the most precious things in the city", but her interpretation is what's precious is the number "2". Meru believes that those who don't believe in fairy tales have their brains habituated to prevent rejection.

Meru tries a different approach with them: there was a starving individual and another picked them up and carried them home; two apples fell from a tree and they decided to eat them together; thus the duo finally understand about how the power of happenstance allows for fairy tales to exist and to tell a story that benefits them. Hakari though tries to reinterpret it stating the duo were a prince and princess; the situation made them grow close, fall in love and get married leading to things getting hot and heavy; but Meru shuts her down stating smut has no place in fairy tales. Hakari balks claiming "but where do babies come from", but Meru believes they all come from peaches and storks, which Hakari believes is no fun.

Disagreeing, Hakari still thinks kissing is part of a fairy tale and lays her lips on Rentarou, with the others soon following. Meru is astonished seeing them all crowding but also taking their turn at the same time, enraptured in pure joy; this ends up making Meru believe she's found the truth: the tale of Rentarou's Family is the World's Salvation! Rentarou offers Meru to join in as she kisses him, stating he was always "her very own fairy tale".
