Master for a Day (
Summary[]
The doorbell of Rentarou’s house goes off and he answers it, saying hello to Mei who is waiting outside for him. They drive off in the car Mei arrived in and Rentarou comments that Hahari gave him a golden opportunity to get close to Mei as she instructed her to be Rentarou’s personal maid for the day. Mei says that she’s been told that Rentarou would like to take a trip out into Japan and asks him where he’d like to go. He asks her what kind of stuff she likes and that he’d like to go wherever they can enjoy what she likes. She tries to take him to the Hanazono mansion, as she likes Hahari, but Rentarou stops her, asking if there is anything else she likes other than Hahari. She says that she also likes Rentarou himself, and offers to drive them back to his house, but is once again stopped. As Mei is unable to think of anything else, Rentarou suggests going to Onibuzaki Park to see the cherry blossoms.
The two of them observe the cherry blossoms together. After a while, Rentarou comments that it’s about lunch time and asks Mei what she’d like to eat. She redirects the question back to Rentarou, and he responds by saying that he’d like to eat her cooking, a request she shouldn’t be able to act on, so she’ll have to choose lunch herself. Mei acknowledges Rentarou’s request and brings back a lunch box. He questions how she was able to prepare food so fast and she says that she could hardly contain herself that morning and prepared the meal in advance. She lays out a picnic blanket and Rentarou eats the lunch box. He comments that everything is egg based and Mei mentions that Hahari told her it was one of his favourite foods, whilst offering him some tea.
After eating lunch, they watch the cherry blossoms for a bit longer until Rentarou points out that Mei looks restless. She asks him if there are any orders that he has for her as she’d like to fully devote herself to him. Rentarou double checks that Mei truly means “any order” and she states that any order is acceptable. Most people would be inclined to think that certain ideas would be flooding into Rentarou’s head, but his love far outweighs his desire, resulting in him struggling to think of what to order Mei to do. He ends up pointing to a nearby cherry blossom branch on the ground and asking her to bring it to him. He realises that something about what he ordered is wrong, noticing that what he ordered is how you play with dogs. He believes that any scumbags that treats woman like dogs should be punished, but this thought does give him an idea. He asks Mei to take the branch and throw it really far, which he then fetches himself. This allows him to give Mei orders without treating her like a dog, though this does confuse her.
Mei reaffirms her point of wanting to devote herself to Rentarou, which prompts him to question why she’s so focused on devoting herself to others and not prioritizing herself. She explains that she doesn’t see value in taking care of herself and being of use to her masters is the only thing she sees value in. Rentarou tells her that he has one order for her: don’t do anything to help him at all. Mei tries to fulfil his order, going as far as hiding out of sight and driving back to the Hanazono Mansion, but Rentarou always manages to find some way she is being helpful to him. Since she couldn’t fulfil his order, Mei believes that the only option left is for her to lay down her life, but Rentarou doesn’t give her the order to do so. He explains that Mei is helping him by the simple act of living, even if she isn’t obeying his direct orders or going out of her way to help him. She’s valuable just the way she is and that all a loved one needs to do is be there. Mei stumbles upon hearing Rentarou say “loved one” and he takes the opportunity to declare his love for her and ask her out. Mei accepts his offer, despite initially mistaking it for an order… twice.
