Plot[]

At the end of the school year, emotions are running high as students exchange goodbyes, some with tears in their eyes, others with lingering hugs. It's a time filled with a mix of sadness and anticipation for what's to come. In the midst of this, one student, Rentaro, decides to take a significant step. He has long harbored feelings for a classmate, and with the school year coming to a close, he sees this as his last opportunity to confess. Nervous yet determined, Rentaro approaches his crush and reveals his feelings. To his surprise, she responds positively at first, complimenting him on his kindness, attentiveness, and the way he is liked by everyone.

For a moment, it seems as though everything is going perfectly, far beyond Rentaro's expectations. However, the situation takes an unexpected turn. After a brief pause, she tells him that, despite all his positive qualities, the idea of dating him makes her feel uncomfortable to the point of nausea. The rejection hits Rentaro hard, leaving him feeling utterly crushed. This isn't Rentaro's first rejection, though. When he confides in his best friend, he is asked how many rejections he has faced so far. Rentaro admits that this was his 30th attempt at confessing his feelings, a staggering number that reflects his persistence despite repeated failures.

Rentaro's journey of unrequited love began early in his life. His first attempt to confess his feelings occurred when he was just five years old, and since then, he has faced one rejection after another. Despite his efforts, it seems that no one is interested in him, even though he possesses qualities that should make him an appealing partner. In contrast, his best friend, who is handsome, intelligent, athletic, and kind, seems to have no trouble attracting attention from both girls and guys. It's a puzzling contrast that Rentaro struggles to understand.

Frustrated and feeling hopeless, Rentaro decides to try something different. As a last resort, he visits a shrine to pray for help with his love life. To his surprise, his prayer appears to be answered, though not in the way he expected. An old man, who introduces himself as the god of the shrine, appears before Rentaro. The god tells him that he need not worry because it is destined that Rentaro will meet his soulmate. However, Rentaro is skeptical of this claim, finding it hard to believe that such a thing could happen to him.

The god explains that soulmates are indeed real, and when they meet, they experience a powerful connection, almost like an electric shock, that draws them together. The god reassures Rentaro that he will recognize his soulmate when they meet, though men, in general, may take a bit longer to realize it than women do. The god also mentions that while not everyone has a soulmate, Rentaro is exceptionally fortunate. In fact, he is destined to meet not just one but a hundred soulmates while in high school.

This revelation is overwhelming for Rentaro. The idea of meeting a hundred soulmates seems too incredible to believe, but at the same time, it gives him a glimmer of hope. The god warns Rentaro that if the prophecy turns out to be false, he has the right to return to the shrine and take whatever action he deems necessary. With this newfound information, Rentaro enters high school with a mixture of anticipation and doubt, eager to see if the prophecy will come true.

On the first day of school, as Rentaro is walking through the halls, he accidentally bumps into two girls. In that moment, he feels a strange sensation, just as the god had described. Rentaro wonders if these two girls could be his soulmates, but he keeps his thoughts to himself to avoid making things awkward. One of the girls, named Hakari, claims to have hurt her ankle in the collision and asks Rentaro for help. Concerned, Rentaro assists her, which only deepens her feelings for him.

The other girl, Inda, also claims to have hurt her ankle and requests Rentaro's help as well. As Rentaro helps them both, he starts to feel a sense of elation, realizing that the prophecy might be true after all. The two girls begin to vie for Rentaro's attention, each trying to outdo the other. Their rivalry becomes more evident when they overhear a rumor that picking a pink four-leaf clover and holding it while confessing will guarantee a positive response.

Determined to win Rentaro's heart, Hakari and Inda spend hours searching for the elusive clover. Rentaro, noticing their efforts, decides to bring them some drinks to refresh themselves. However, when he finds Inda alone, she becomes nervous and tries to downplay her feelings for him, even though she is clearly interested. Hakari soon arrives, and not wanting to be outdone, she suggests they share the drink Rentaro brought. Rentaro, unaware of the underlying tension, offers them both smaller drinks, trying to be considerate.

As they interact, the emotions between them become more intense. Hakari, unable to contain her feelings any longer, confesses her love for Rentaro. She acknowledges that her feelings are sudden, but she can no longer keep them to herself. Before Rentaro can respond, Inda arrives and also confesses her love, not wanting to be left behind. Rentaro finds himself in a difficult position, unsure of how to handle the situation.

Seeking guidance, Rentaro returns to the shrine to ask the god for advice. Instead of resolving his dilemma, the god informs him that both girls are indeed his soulmates. The god explains that Rentaro is an unusual case, as most people only have one soulmate, but due to a mistake made during Rentaro's creation, he was given a hundred. The god also warns that if Rentaro rejects one of his soulmates, it could have dire consequences for both of them, potentially leading to a tragic end.

Rentaro considers the possibility of dating both girls in secret but quickly realizes that this would only lead to more complications and hurt their feelings. The next morning, he decides to be honest with them. He tells them that he wants to date both of them because he cares for them too much to choose between them. To demonstrate his sincerity, Rentaro presents them with two pink four-leaf clovers, which he had spent all night searching for.

Hakari, moved by Rentaro's gesture and his willingness to be honest, accepts his proposal. She admits that her love for him is so strong that she is willing to share him with Inda if it means being with him. Inda, though initially reluctant, also agrees but warns Rentaro that he must treat her well or face the consequences. Rentaro, having finally found a way to be with both girls without hurting them, feels a sense of relief and accomplishment.

In the end, Rentaro's persistence and honesty pay off, and he begins a relationship with both Hakari and Inda, determined to make them happy. Though the journey was fraught with challenges, Rentaro has learned the importance of being true to himself and those he cares about.

Manga and Anime Differences[]

  • In the manga, Rentarou repeats the Love God's explanation of his rejection streak - leading to a fourth wall break where he gets called out for wasting panels. In the anime, one of the panels of dialogue is skipped as a fourth wall break.
  • The name of the school is already Ohananomitsu High School; in the original chapter and for the first four volumes, the school has no name and is not revealed until Chapter 33.
  • Before Rentarou encouters Hakari and Karane for the first time - in the manga, he's walking down the school corridor explaining the time skip. In the anime, he's attending his school's entrance ceremony instead.
  • Rentarou commenting on "being the luckiest telephone pole in the universe" is an anime original scene, only the line is present in the manga.
  • After being confessed to by Hakari and Karane, several panels were cut out of Rentarou walking home in bliss over the confessions, before he begins panicking at home.
  • The scene where the Love God and Rentarou discuss Laputa was extended in the anime, and includes a panel from the Volume 1 extras.
  • At the end of the episode, when Hakari and Karane are hugging Rentarou's chest, the sides they are hugging are reversed from the manga. Hakari hugs Rentarou's right in the anime whilst she hugs his left in the manga, and the opposite for Karane
  • Shizuka, Nano and Kusuri all have cameos at the end of the episode. In the manga, they aren't seen until their debut chapters (Chapters 3, 6, and 10 respectively).
    • Meme also cameos in the episode at the entrance ceremony for the first-years, where she doesn't stand out due to her design being essentially an anonymous background character.
