Mei Meido (
Appearance[]
Mei Full Appearance
Default Appearance[]
Mei has black, neatly-styled hair, tied in a braid and covered by a white headcloth.
She is usually portrayed with a serene smile on her face, and with her eyes closed - to the point of being unable to open them when asked to. Despite this, she can go about her daily life and duties without being able to see anything.
She will, however, involuntarily open her eyes when confronted with emotional shock (such as when forcing herself to stop laughing at her mistress). Her irises have all the colors of the rainbow, when visible.
Maid Uniform[]
Mei usually wears the Hanazono estate's maid uniform while on duty - consisting of a black, long-sleeved, form-fitting dress with a white hem, and puffy sleeves around the upper arms.
Mei completes her look with a white apron, brown boots, and a flower hair accessory, which ties up her hair.
When off-duty, Mei usually lets her hair down.
Personality[]
Mei is polite and proper, rarely showing strong emotions. She is very loyal to Hahari above all else and is unlikely to do anything unless given permission or ordered to by Hahari specifically. Mei's fanatical loyalty to the Rentarou Family and the Hanazono Household results in her gladly offering to "eliminate" people that threaten, insult, or even mildly inconvenience Rentarou, Hahari, or the other girlfriends.
Mei loves that Rentarou makes Hahari happy and helps her accept that it's okay for them to do favors for her. She has shown on several occasions her love for being a dog and acting as one, always faithful and loyal.
Abilities[]
Housekeeping[]
As a professional maid, Mei serves the Hanazono household in many ways, such as cleaning the house, preparing food and drink, and aiding her employers in any way possible. Mei usually serves as Hahari's personal maid, accompanying her to school and acting as her aide during school hours. Mei also helps prepare snacks and tea for Rentarou's Family, when they spend time on the school rooftop.
It is noted that Mei is especially capable and diligent at her job, even by Hanazono household staff standards.
Vehicle Operation[]
Mei possesses a driver's license, and usually chauffeurs Hahari and Hakari to and from school. She is also a qualified helicopter and airplane pilot, having flown these vehicles when required to.
Environmental Perception[]
Mei is usually seen with a gentle expression on her face and her eyes closed - which is her way of always appearing ready and willing to serve her mistress. Due to maintaining this facial expression for extended periods of time, Mei cannot open her eyes at will (unless under extreme circumstances such as emotional shock).
While this renders her completely blind, Mei is able to compensate by using her other senses to perceive objects in her environment and avoid danger. Thus, she can carry out her duties without needing to see.
Physical Strength[]
Mei is one of the more physically fit members of Rentarou's Family, and serves as Hahari's bodyguard while on duty. Despite being functionally blind, she is a skilled combatant and markswoman (as seen in the Super-Soaked Maid Party). When ordered by Hahari to carry out a task, Mei will attempt to fulfil her order at any cost. This allows her to surpass her own physical limits of strength and stamina, with Rentarou comparing this to having a buff cast on her.
Sportsmanship[]
Mei is also good at athletics and sports as seen when pitching in the baseball game against Jurassic High School, when training Rentarou's Family before they went for yakiniku, and in the relay race at the Quad-Town Public Sports Festival.
History[]
Mei works as the Hanazono Household maid. She has brief cameos in Chapters 18, 20 21, 28, and 29 but makes her debut in Chapter 30. During a conversation about eye color with Rentarou's family in Chapter 30, Mei's eye color was brought up by Hahari. Hahari is the only one who has seen Mei's eyes when they're open, and although Mei initially refuses to open her eyes and stop smiling, she does attempt to do so when asked to by Hahari. Despite this, Mei's eyes are stuck shut from being that way for so long.
Mei only opens her eyes when Rentarou tricks her into laughing at a story about Hahari, causing her to stop smiling and look at him. When their eyes meet, the two feel the soulmate shock. She attempts to hide her sudden new feelings, but the girls see her blushing deeply and can tell she has fallen for Rentarou and eagerly accept her into the family. Mei initially refuses to join, as loving the same person as her master is "inexcusable". However, as soon as Hahari gives her permission, Mei asks Rentarou to go out with her.
Etymology[]
- Meido means "Inscription" (銘) (myou/mei) and "Door" (戸) (to/do).
- Meido is a homophone for "maid" (メイド) (meido).
- Mei means "Bud", "Sprout", or "Shoot" (芽) (ga/me) and "Cloth" (衣) (koromo/e/i).
- The combination of "ido" and "Mei" may also be a play on itome (
糸 目 itome?), which is a Japanese term used to described narrow, closed eyes characters.
Trivia[]
- Mei has kissed and been kissed by Rentarou at least 21 times as of Chapter 180.
- Even after falling in love with Rentarou she still holds Hahari at the highest regard.
- Mei's birthday, May 10th, is a pun on Meido, "Mei" being romaji of "May" and "do" being Goroawase (wordplay) for the number 10 (juu/to/do). Suu is able to remember her name in the same way in Chapter 124.
- May 10th in Japan is also acknowledged as "Maid Day".
- In the official anime website, Mei is credited as "The Hanazono Family Maid" (
花 園 家 のメイド Hanazono-ke no Meido?).- Following her formal introduction in the anime, the aforementioned link now redirects to an updated character page with her name instead.
- Prior to her formal introduction in Episode 15, Mei's voice acting credits were simply credited as "Maid" (メイド) (meido).
