—Nadeshiko Yamato to Rentarou Aijou at Chapter 57 | ||
Nadeshiko Yamato (
Appearance[]
Naddy's full render (Bibury).
Nadeshiko has turquoise blue eyes, and long hair reaching her mid-back. It was originally black, but she has dyed it blonde using bleach. Her hair has a slight greenish tinge and has problems staying the way it should due to her bleaching.[2]
Regular Attire[]
In accordance with her love of all things American - Nadeshiko dresses like a stereotypical cowgirl.
Her regular outfit consists of a leather crop top with fringe, high-rise denim shorts with a belt, chaps on her forearms and legs, and cowgirl boots. She completes the look with a western cowboy hat, and an American flag bandanna.
Childhood Appearance[]
As the heiress of the Yamato family, she wore traditional Japanese clothing, consisting of a kimono and geta. Her hair was also in its original black color.
Personality[]
Nadeshiko is a freeaboo[3] or Americophile[4] who has a very freedom loving and greatly admires American culture due to her fascination with the USA. This was due to her finding and watching a VHS tape of a group of American children acting contrary to her family's strict traditional Japanese customs.
Nadeshiko would also hide the fact that she was really Japanese from people after getting kicked out. Thanks to Rentarou, she learned to confront the fact that she did not feel ashamed of not living up to Japanese values. She loves American food, however, she does not know how to drink soda.
Abilities[]
Freedom of Life[]
Despite pretending to be an American, Nadeshiko does not seem to be able to shake off her traditional Japanese upbringing. She is shown to be very well versed in nearly anything Japanese, including traditional style of dance, Enka singing, and even some sword skill (during her match with Kishika). Based on her introduction chapter, Nadeshiko seems to have some ability to play the koto.
American Justice Lasso[]
Nadeshiko throws her rope to catch her prey. It uses to catch Akogare and Manesu, but is only stopped by Chiyo who headbutted her before she succeeded to throw it and is accused as child abuse.[5]
Linguistics[]
Nadeshiko has a perfect mastery of the Japanese language from her formal upbringing, enough to be skilled to be certified as a teacher. However, Nadeshiko does not seem able to speak English fluently, despite her love of America. It is also known that she started learning English from a book, and that she always had many mistakes.[6] Further, it's revealed later that due to Naddy's bizarre means of talking to her students with her English, it keeps the class engaged and forces them to understand what she's saying, improving their grades.[7]
Japanese Culture Skillset[]
Although she prefers the American way of life now, Naddy's upbringing as the eldest daughter of the Yamato household has given her several skills befitting of a Japanese woman of high stature. These skills include ability in Japanese dance and singing in an enka quality[8]; as well as some skill in kendo swordsmanship that was enough to be complimented by Kishika in her abilities.[9] However she was also noted for lacking in other manners; her ability in playing the koto is lacking due to her hatred of playing it by her parents' wishes.[10]
History[]
Nadeshiko is the eldest daughter of the Yamato household. Her family held strict Japanese traditional values and forced her to wear a kimono every day and learn Japanese arts such as learning to play the koto. After being thrown in the shed after failing to play the koto, Nadeshiko discovered a VHS tape of American kids watching TV and doing things in contrary to the strict rules that were put on her (e.g. eating on the couch, wearing shoes inside, and drinking soda directly from the bottle). Nadeshiko would then be obsessed with freedom and American values to the point where she changes her fashion sense and appearance. This led to her parents considering her a disgrace to both the family and Japan, kicking her out of the house in the process.
After Rentarou's previous Japanese teacher resigned due to winning the lottery, Nadeshiko (now calling herself "Miss Naddy") was assigned to be the replacement Japanese teacher. After locking eyes with him and experiencing the "soulmate shock", Nadeshiko asked Rentarou to stay after class with her. After some talking, he figured out that Miss Naddy wasn't American and was in fact Japanese.
Relationships[]
Rentarou Aijou[]
As Rentarou's Japanese teacher, she has a formal relationship with him; but he helps her accept her freedom and understanding of who she is despite her upbringing.
Chiyo Iin[]
Although Chiyo is in the middle school side, Naddy has come to work alongside her due to Chiyo's obsession with rules and regulations. While she does not approve of Naddy's wild side, the duo have come to an understanding, in particular how she helped in taming two troublesome students by teaching her how to be more free and defy authority when required.[5]
Yaku Yakuzen[]
While much older than Naddy, Yaku is one of the only members of the family who is also of a more formal Japanese background and the duo have bonded on multiple occasions; including working together on a combination American/Japanese sweets shop during the shopping district experience with Ahko[11] and Yaku being the crucial one who prevented Naddy from being fired from her teaching job for her friendly nature.[12]
Yamato Household[]
Nadeshiko is the eldest daughter of the esteemed Yamato household, who possess 2000 years of history that they pride themselves upon. However due to her choices to embrace the American lifestyle of freedom, Naddy has become a disgrace to her family, to the point that her younger sister has become forced to take the position as future head of the household by their mother due to her banishment. Naddy has fears of her family trying to force her to return home leading to nightmares that she is getting guidance in handling by way of fellow Family member Nemu Nemui; while assassins from the Yamato home have started working to create circumstances within Naddy's own life to force her return including using a pillow stuffed with stuffing from the Yamato Household to remind her of home.[13]
Etymology[]
Her full name comes directly from the term "yamato nadeshiko" (やまとなでしこ), which refers to the "personification of the idealized Japanese woman". It is a typically demure and polite, with long dark hair often styled neatly, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing.
- Yamato (大和) is an ancient name for Japan.
- Nadeshiko (なでしこ or 撫子) is a type of pink carnation, translating to "Japanese Dianthus".
Trivia[]
- Nadeshiko has kissed and been kissed by Rentarou at least 23 times as of Chapter 181.
- Not including Hahari, Nadeshiko is the first member of the teaching staff to join Rentarou's Family as one of his girlfriends.
- Nadeshiko's birthday, February 11th, is Japan's National Foundation Day. But more importantly, it is also "Religious Freedom Day" (
信 教 の自 由 を守 る日 Shinkyō no jiyū wo mamoru hi?).
