Nemu Nemui (
Appearance[]
Nemu has fluffy, light cyan shoulder-length hair, and light brown pupils. Due to her narcolepsy, she always has a sleepy expression on her face. She is noted to be especially tall and well-developed for her age - which she attributes to getting a lot of sleep.
School Uniform[]
Nemu accessorizes her Ohananomitsu Middle School girl's uniform with a light cyan knit sweater vest, dark necktie, white loose socks, and a pair of black loafers of her own design. She also wears a white hairband.
Shoemaker's Attire[]
While working in her grandparents' shoemaking shop, she wears a leather apron, and ties her hair into pigtails.
Personality[]
Nemu is a middle school second-year student who always looks sleepy when her eyes are open because she often stays up late making shoes. But when she closes her eyes, she looks happy smiling like she is having a beautiful dream and becomes an extremely active sleepwalker, which further drains her energy.
Initially, Nemu acts skeptical in reaction to Rentarou's confession, seeing herself as gloomy, which hints to low self-esteem issues. Her sleeping alter-ego being a cheerful, ever-smiling girl suggests that this is her idealized self.
Abilities[]
Shoemaking[]
Nemu is a skilled shoemaker, having learned her craft from her grandparents at their shop, and making her first pair of shoes by herself in third grade.[1] She created a custom pair of shoes as a gift for Rentarou.
Sleepwalking[]
Due to her constant narcolepsy, Nemu can fall asleep anywhere and everywhere. While asleep, Nemu has a tendency to sleepwalk.
While in this state, Nemu can still act as if she were awake including visiting an arcade, interacting with others, and even crafting shoes. Upon waking up, Nemu will remember her actions while asleep as if they were a dream. When asleep, she reveals that her true personality is that of "a cheerful girl", confirmed by how her dream self is less pessimistic and more cheerful.[1]
Nightmare Buster[]
While under the effects of Kusuri's Super Ultra Ultimatical Sleeping Incense, Rentarou's Family suffer from nightmares as a side effect. Nemu takes it upon herself to dispel the nightmares by lining up the girls and dragging Rentarou across them, so he kisses all of them in their sleep.[2]
After consoling Naddy during a sleepover, Nemu appears in her dreams to beat back any nightmares that invades them.[3]
History[]
Nemu dedicates much of her time to crafting shoes, often staying up late to perfect her creations. This commitment to her craft showcases her artistic talent and dedication. Due to her late-night shoemaking, Nemu frequently appears sleepy during the day. Her constant drowsiness is a notable aspect of her character, affecting her daily life and interactions. Despite her daytime lethargy, Nemu becomes extremely active during sleepwalking episodes. During these times, she can interact with her surroundings in remarkable ways, though she cannot speak. This sleepwalking further drains her energy, creating a cycle of fatigue. Nemu's unique traits and dedication to her craft endear her to Rentarou, who appreciates her talents and supports her endeavors. Their relationship adds depth to the narrative, highlighting themes of understanding and acceptance.
Etymology[]
- Her full name phonetically means “Sleepy Sleep”, which is a play on the word "Nemu" which means to sleep.
- Nemui means "Root/Base"(根), "Facing"(向), and "Well"(井).
- Nemu means "Peaceful"(寧), "Dream"(夢).
Trivia[]
- Nemu has kissed and been kissed by Rentarou at least 4 times as of Chapter 195.
- Nemu's story and scenario is similar to that of the fairy tale "The Elves and the Shoemaker", where she tends to wake up after sleeping having made a pair of shoes while in her sleeping state.
- Nemu's birthday, September 3rd, is a Goroawase (wordplay) of the adverb for sleeping deeply: ぐっ(9)すり(3), Gu(9)ssuri(3 in katakana:スリー); as such, September 3rd has been denoted as Bed Day (ベッドの日 Beddo no hi) in Japan, and is also Autumn Sleep Day (秋の睡眠の日 Aki no suimin no hi). It may also be a play on "The Elves and the Shoemaker" being listed as the 39th entry in Grimm's Fairy Tales, since in day-month numerical format, September 3rd would be rendered as 3/9.
- Nemu shares a birthday with Kurumi.
